The Scottish Covenanters

Preachers, Martyrs & Believers of the Scottish Covenant

PATRICK HAMILTON. This young man of God who was set on fire by the Reformed preaching of Martin Luther. With a soul ablaze he returned to dark superstitious Scotland with a burning heart, burning Gospel and a burning tongue. He became the first martyr of this new dispentation in the nation. The fire that burnt his body blew embers across the whole country. His life and death marked a new era that was about to crash upon the nation.

Patrick Hamilton

GEORGE WISHART Educated at Cambridge but prepared and sent by God to be the voice of God to his homeland of Scotland. Above all others in this early era he was noted as a Propet and Seer of God. He returned to his homeland in an era when the Catholic Church was thirsty for the Blood of Martyrs. He preached in the plague ridden streets of Dundee as well as under trees in the open air all with the purpose of seeing a true church raised up in the nation. He was a man who frequently rose up in the middle of the night in order to wrestle with God in prayer on behalf of his beloved nation.

JOHN KNOX is of course notorious as far as the Reformation in Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots feared his prayers more than the marchings of the Armies of England. In forty days of powerful preaching the nation was utterly changed. It was said that he could put more life in a man with his preaching than 40 trumpets could if they were blown in his ear.

JOHN WELCH. Son-in-law of John Knox, he more than matched his father-in-law for noteriety. A wrestler with God like Jacob. God set him before Kings and princes to preach the Gospel, spoke through him with prophetic vision and in answer to his prayer of faith restored the dead to life.
