Tract 7. by Keith Malcomson.
Healing In The Atonement
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53.
All know and believe that this prophesy of Isaiah is concerning Jesus Christ coming to die for His people on the Cross. How clear a prophesy it is, it speaks of His rejection, His sorrow, His suffering, of being oppressed and afflicted. Of His willing submission to all this. Of His spiritual seed being justified by His righteousness and death on the cross. This picture is so vivid. Who could deny that this is Christ dieing on the Cross? In verse 5 we see Him wounded and bruised for our transgressions and iniquities. We see Him suffering for our sin, for us as sinners. Seeing this provision we must believe and we shall receive wonderful deliverance. We must see, we must hear, How shall they hear without a preacher?
God is a Healer.
Today in Evangelical circles believers will say they believe every miracle and healing of the Bible. They even believe that in the Old Testament what God said to His people Israel, I am the God that healeth thee. It was one of His Jehovah-Redemptive names. Name denotes character, to heal His people was His character. Who would deny that He is still the Lord our shepherd or the Lord our Banner? Yet they deny today that He is still the Lord that healeth. Many today believe He could heal
if He wanted to. They could never pray with assurance of Gods will, or with confidence that when they prayed they would be healed. They never see in there churches the sick healed, yet they say God could if He wanted. But generally in these churches He never does. Still a few others do believe that He heals today, they do pray with faith and there are testimonies in there churches of healing but still they may hold back from saying there is healing in the atonement. But what saith the scripture?
Is Healing In the Atonement?
The greatest of Hebrew Scholars of every denomination for at least a couple of hundred years when giving an exact, accurate translation of verse 4 in Isa.53 all agree that it is speaking of physical illness, sickness and disease. Surely he hath borne our griefs (Kholee=sicknesses) and carried our sorrows (Makob=pains). Every time these words for sickness and pains are used in the Old Testament it is never speaking of spiritual things but always physical. The author of Youngs concordance translated this verse as Surely our sicknesses he hath borne, and our pains he hath carried them. Other popular careful preachers of the Word saw this, such men as Alexander McLaren, A.J. Gordon, Andrew Murray, A.B. Simpson, Sidlow Baxter and others.
The Doctrine of the Apostles.
But it is not to such men that we look for a clear interpretation and answer. We look to the inspired New Testament . When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Matthew, the Apostle, believed that when he read Isa. 53 he found a fulfillment to these great promises in the healing, delivering ministry of Christ. Men can argue about this verse and say there is ONLY spiritual healing here in Isaiah, but Matthew would disagree with them. When he saw Christ healing ALL that were sick, he said this is exactly what Isaiah prophesied about. Who would dare pitch the commentaries of theologians and doctrine of imperfect preachers against the only true commentary written by an Apostle of the Lamb under the direct inspiration and moving of the Holy ghost?
The Apostles of the Lamb.
The Revelation of Christ Jesus that these men carried flowed out into a barren wilderness of darkness bringing salvation, deliverance and healing where ever they went. Is there Christ different than ours? Must we interpret scripture different than them? Were they given the advantage of power (dynamite) in order to reach a lost unbelieving world which we are not allowed now? Were they allowed to satisfy there compassion with seeing the sick healed, while we stand by, helpless, frustrated, powerless? Are we not to continue stedfastly in the Apostles doctrine, teaching? Do we have the special privilege of not believing these things, while the Apostles and early church were commanded to continue in them? Christ rebuked the Apostles when they could not deliver, or did not believe. The Apostles always prayed with faith for the sick. They believed it was all part of the commission of Christ until He would return again. Have we exalted generations of Evangelical doctrine above written Scripture?
Some Abuses.
In this last generation and increasingly we have seen abuses and extremes in the areas of finance and healing which has brought skepticism, ridicule and fear upon any strong teaching in this area. I would be the first to reject and expose extremes and the last to cover those who propagate such. I would never accuse a sick person of unbelief if not healed, Jesus didn't. I would never condemn a man for going to the doctor, Jesus didn't, in fact He sent the healed lepers to the priest to prove they were healed. But it is possible that we are so careful not to hurt the sick who are not healed that we lighten scripture and deny truth. How can we steal the promises of healing from saints merely because we fear it will not work. Extremism breeds extremism. When the church does not walk in the light of the Bible in such things as healing and the supernatural then it breeds another extremism that casts off all care, balance and wisdom. We aught to stand uncompromisingly for God as a Healer, of Christ's provision and promise of healing without bruising the weak and faltering. We need not run to extreme teachings and doctrines or to heretical preachers and prophets who speak of healing while the true church doubts it and denies it. We don't need to fall into either camp we need only search, study and believe the scriptures.
Who healeth all thy diseases.
All you that are sick, all you that have loved ones suffering, oppressed and bound, look away to Jesus, hear Him say I am the LORD that healeth thee. And again Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction... Today look to Jesus as a healer, deliverer and Saviour.
